 Recent 5 Favorites

Smart Playlists
redline

After I load up or download and rate a three or four CDs, I like to be able to replay several times at least 5 of the most favorite cuts I rated from the recently added batch. So here's my little--not so unique--contribution.

Match all:

Date added is in the last 1 day
My rating is greater than 3
Limit to five songs selected by most recently played

 Looking Back: School Days

Smart Playlists
redline

I've been having a lot of fun with this one- smart playlists for the years I went to high school and college. Mine are two separate lists, but I suppose you could combine them.

Create a smart playlist:

Match - All
Year - is in the range - start year to end year
My Rating - is in the range - *** to *****

It truly is amazing how the music can bring you back.

I thought about limiting this only to tracks from my cd collection, but the extra tracks are a great addition. You'll undoubtedly notice "best of" and "greatest hits" collections from other years appearing in your date ranges, but in my case I decided to leave them be. I did listen to those collections, even though they are earlier works.

 not so smart playlist

Smart Playlists

for ipod owners who are not very smart the new version of itunes (4.2) will offer to automatically create a special ipod selection smart playlist if the number of tunes on your computer exceeds the number of tunes that can fit on the ipod - it is unclear on what basis this list is created but i personally like to have a bit more control over what songs are on my ipod thanks :1

so for what it is worth here is my solution : firstly the pod is set to sync only ticked songs (so if there is a song you don't want synced you can just untick it) then i created the following smart playlists :

rated
(rating>0)

rated=5
(for my absolute favourites)

rated>1
(for those i like more than just a bit)

new!
(added after 1.1.04 so i know i always have any songs i added to the computer this year)

played
(playcount>0 so i know that any song i have ever listened to on the computer is there and i only have to play a song on the computer to know that it will be on the pod the next time i sync)

and that's it!

(of course i have set the preferences for the pod to only sync to those nominated playlists duh...)

 High Fidelity

Smart Playlists
redline

I was watching the Nick Hornby authored - John Cusak movie "High Fidelity" recently. And there's a scene where Cusak's character is rearranging his extensive record collection autobiographically.

So when he wants to hear a certain song, he will have to think about where he was in his life at the time of purchase etc in order to find it amongst the thousands of records he owns.

I don't think such a thing is quite possible with SmartPlaylists, but I have kind of come up with something similar.

I think with good use of the comments field, you can cross reference a single song into many categories.

For example, one of my favourite bands is Lush.

My keywords in the comments field for Lush are:

4AD (the record label)
HighSchool (where I was at the time of release)

And then I added some descriptive words for their sound:
Flange
Shoegazing
Ethereal

I also added some soundalike band names, for cross referencing with 'if you like these, check out these'...

Ride
MyBloodyValentine
ThePixies
PaleSaints
CocteauTwins

You can see the possibilites opening up for cross referenced SmartPlaylists

I can have a playlist not just for HighSchool, but for bands I got into during HighSchool as a result of discovering ThePixies etc etc...

If they're named cleverly enough, they can provide a fairly accurate snapshot of a period of your life, that doesn't just require a date. You could add a person you were friends with at the time, someone you were dating that a song reminds you of...

Like I said, it's not quite the same as the autobiographical sorting from the movie, but can in someway tell certain stories of your life!

Create Smart Playlists according to "Group" in songs...

Smart Playlists
redline

I have created 2 applescripts to help with better organizing the songs using the power of smart-playlists. The scripts basically allow to "add" and "remove" a group to the songs. This is added to "grouping" field of songs. You can then create smart playlists according to group name added.

For example, I can assign groups "Rock, Love, Morning, College" to a song, and have smart playlists with "Love" in grouping with all the love songs. This way, the playlists automatically maintain themselves and a song can be in multiple playlists without any trouble of actually maintaining them.

The scripts are at http://scf.usc.edu/~dwipalde/itunes.htm. These scripts can add/remove group to the selected songs in iTunes.
