Give every track a rating of three and stick it on your ipod. If, while wandering around town, a track sticks out as good, that will prompt you to increase the rating. If a track sticks out as bad, then you'll notice it and lower the rating. Any song that you don't really notice as bad or great is most likely middle of the road...and stays a three.
hmm...it sounded a bit more clever before i wrote it down. anyway...it works for me.
OK, I know how to change the rating in iTunes.. in fact, all of my songs have been rated for a while. But how do I change the rating in my iPod? I don't see the stars anywhere and can't seem to find a way to make them appear.

when the screen shhows the song info (same screen where you can change to volume) hit the select button (the one in the middle of the scrollwheel) twice to get tot the songs rating.

I tried doing that, but stopped after like 10 albums because it essentially takes a rating system that has 6 positions (0-5) and decreases it to 5 (1-5).
What if a song is actually worth 3 stars, you now have no way of distinguishing between that song and the other 1000 songs that you haven't actually gotten a chance to rate yet. It also keeps you from making a playlist of unrated (rating is 0).
I wish it had 10 stars, but that's not going to happen anytime soon, so I'm at least going to have to make the most use of what we do have.
So, if the song hasn't been rated yet, just leave it unrated until you actually rate it.
