If I sync manually will songs I rate in my iPod be recognized by iTunes or do I have to be using auto-sync?

 Art Changes?

Questions
redline

When you click on an art album cover, it pops onto your screen. That's great, but I would like to see it change automically when it changes to a new song by a different artist--like when you have a playlist of different artists and different album covers.

Any ideas?

Ratings transferred when in manual sync mode?

Questions
redline

I am currently trying to clean up my 3800 songs in iTunes so that I can make better use of the smart playlists. Cleaning up wack genre listings from CDDB and adding ratings is tops on my lists. If i'm using manual sync mode and I rate a song on my iPod will this update iTunes or do I have to be in auto sync?

 Live-updating: a little TOO live?

Questions
redline

Pretty much all of my Smart Playlists depend on Live Updating to keep them refreshing appropriately. However, whenever I play these playlists in iTunes, as soon as a song is played it is removed from the top of the list, and a new song is added to the bottom. As a result, the currently playing track is always the first one in the list, and iTunes will just play and play forever, never getting to the end of the list.

This annoys me, because sometimes I fall asleep while listening to music, and would like iTunes to stop playing after a while. Anybody have any ideas for this?

[I am a PC user, so I can't use any of those nice apple scripts out there...]

Random list for iPod with songs *not* in any other playlist?

Questions
redline

Dear folks,

I have the small 5GB iPod which is somehow problematic with my evergrowing song collection of currently more than 7.4 GB.

My problem: I have some playlists on the iPod requiring say 4 GB. Now I want to fill the remaining space of one GB with randomly selected tunes from my iTunes library.

I know there are some scripts out there doing this - but these scripts pick also songs that are already in other playlists on my iPod. This means, some songs are replicated in this list and not all the available space is occupied - in other words, wasted.

So my question is: How does one create a playlist that contains randomly selected tunes that are not in other playlist i have on my iPod?

Sorry for the lengthy post -
fruzzo

 Song Order Muddled?

Questions
redline

I made a mix CD for a friend from an iTunes playlist (not a Smart Playlist), but when my iPod syncs (it updates automatically) the songs in that playlist appear in reversed order on the iPod! I've tried reversing the order in iTunes, but it doesn't fix the problem, they're still reversed on the iPod. The only solution I've found is to transfer all the songs to a new playlist and re-sync. It works, but only the first time - after that they're all reversed again. It's only this one playlist.

Adjusting when iPod/iTunes considers a song "played"?

Questions
redline

This is probably imposible, but...

Is there any way to have the iPod and iTunes consider a song "played" after hearing less than the full song?

I have a smart playlist which is made up of songs I haven't played in the past 60 days. However, when I skip through a song it's not marked as played and not purged from the list on sync. Because of this, my playlist becomes front-loaded with songs I find myself skipping through over and over.

Ideally, I could set a parameter to mark a song as played after xx seconds of play.

Is anyone aware of a hack of this sort?

Recently Added Playlist is Empty on iPod?

Questions
redline

I have had a smart playlist called "Recently Added" which is "Date Added" + "in the last" + "2 weeks"

It used to work fine but now it only works in iTunes. When it automatically updates my songs and playlists, and I check my iPod, the smart playlist is empty.

Any help?

 Adding songs to playlist?

Questions
redline

I recently deleted all of my songs from my library in order to free up some space on my computer. So, all of my songs are on the iPod. I have two different smart playlists, but I'm having trouble adding songs to them. They each already contain a good number of songs, but occassionally I see one that I would like to add. I've tried dragging it from my iPod to the smart playlist, but it did not work. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

 Restore playlists?

Questions
redline

It seems that by virtue of their set up smart playlists are robust when restoring a duff iPod - Yes they are fragile little fellows. (Had the disk and magnifying glass some six weeks after receiving a 3G 20GB). The wisdom from Apple was RESTORE. Having 10GB of splendid audio, I backed up my collection and cleared my mac for a fresh onslaught. One week later BAM! I had to restore and reload the ipod. This is where the smart play lists come in. Maybe I don't know what the heck I'm doing, but my playlists are all empty having reloaded the 12 CDs worth back onto my groaning Ti. It seems the only lists that maintain integrity are the smart lists.

I figure maybe i could use comments to create robust smart lists to replace my individual playlists. After all, it's bound to happen again (then need to restore), well at least until the battery fails. Can someone explain?
