 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Tier Playlists

iTunes Tips
redline

We all know that playlists are listed in alphabetical order. But what do you do when your most-used playlists doesn't begin with the letter "A?"

Well, to get your favorite playlists towards the top, regardless of what alphabetical letter they begin with, try using a combination of periods and colons.

For your 1st tier (most-used/favorite) playlists, use a period followed by a colon (.:) at the beginning of the title.

For 2nd tier, use a colon and a period (:.)

3rd tier, use two colons (::)

And lastly for the 4th tier, don't use a period or colon at all. If you do this, your playlists will look something like this...

.: New Music
:. Favorites
:. Least Played
:: Car Mix
:: Office Mix
Archive
Bedtime
Feel Good Mix

Keeping It All In Sync (Playcount, My Rating, etc)

iTunes Tips
redline

Problem:

Using manual iPod update, Playcount and My Rating (i.e.) will not be synchronized between iPod and iTunes.

To fix this problem, you can use synchronization BUT...

Using synchronization of your entire collection sometimes doesn't work (because of the limited iPod capacity).

To fix this, you can synchronize a selection of playlists BUT...

Using synchronization (of a selection of playlists) will not allow you to create Smart Playlist for your iPod music in particular.

What I did, is as follows:

1) Create an iTunes Manual Playlist "iPod Music" where you (manually put all the music to be synchronized with your iPod).
2) Create as many Smart Playlists (for iPod music) as you like, all starting with: "Playlist is 'iPod Music'", so that the queries will only affect the music on your iPod.
3) Synchronize the "iPod Music" playlist and all Smart Playlists based on iPod music.

You are now be able to:

- easily (manually) add/remove music from your iPod, by adding/removing from the "iPod Music" Playlist.
- keep My Rating and Play Count synchronized between iTunes and iPod.
- have Smart Playlists based on iPod Music.

This is also a great oppurtunity for older (1st gen) iPod users using playlists based on My Rating and Play Count.

 iTunes Manages PDF's?

iTunes Tips
redline

Did you know that PDF's can be managed by iTunes. Doug Adams pointed out that this was first mentioned on MacOSXHints.

Apple has clearly added pdf support to iTunes in order to manage album artwork/liner notes. The only known music store files with associated PDF's are U2's "Complete" & "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb."

You can even create a PDF Smart Playlist. Doug created a Live Updating Smart Playlist that snags all the PDFs he's added to the Library.

 Classical Ratings

iTunes Tips
redline

iTunes' star system of ratings isn't the best fit for classical music. I suggest that Apple add a new column to view options that uses symbols to rate the moods of a piece of music. I saw this sort of rating used in Jeremy Nicolas' book, "The Classical FM Guide to Good Music."

For each piece that he reviews he assigns one or more symbols: a trumpet for celebratory music, a heart for romantic music, a tear drop for sad music, a sun/cloud for relaxing music, a candle for inspirational music, and a champagne bottle for another category (I forget which). Similar symbol ratings could apply to popular music. Apple could offer a more extended set of symbols from which the user could select those that are most relevant to his iTunes collection. Let me know what you think.

dfbills adds: You could easily accomplish this with keywords, but it is an interesting concept
