Limiting nested smart playlists?

Why isn't there a way to make a smart playlist out of nested playlists but tell the smart playlists how many songs from each playlist to create?

Here's an example (as I realize that makes NO sense)

Let's say I want a mix of songs I've listened to lots with songs I've never listened too -- so I have 2 playlists:

1]


playcount is over 3

and

2]


playcount is 0

now, I want to make a smart playlist (arranged randomly- lets say 25 songs)) that will mix the two of them but put lets say 20 songs from playlist 1 and 5 from playlist 2. It doesn't seem that there's a way to do something like this... ???

Backing Up iTunes?

Hi. I backed-up my library in March and now want to update the 1,000+ songs I've added.

I created a SmartPlaylist with Date Added After March but got to thinking about the songs in the Library that have been modified, i.e., chart position, renames, etc. based on my continued research. I then added to the SmartPlayList a Dated Modifed After March and got 12,000+ songs (my whole Library).

Apparently, Date Modified doesn't mean what I think it does. Is there a way to back-up changes made to songs already in the Library and backed-up that I'm not figuring out?

Lastly, will someone confirm that I have to live with just backing-up new adds rather than a comprehensive back-up that I want.

Setting Ratings for SPL?

I know this has probably been addressed....but, How do you set up a SPL for my Rating? When I set up my rating is greater than, I can't put in the stars for the rating system.

Jazz Labels?

I'm starting to build my jazz collection and thought I'd identify each jazz muscian as one or more of the following in the comments area:

saxaphonist
trumperter
keyboardist
vocalist
percussionist
vibraphonist
bassist
guitarist
clarinetist
flutist

Types of Jazz for keyword section:

classic
jazz fuzzion
smooth jazz
latin jazz
free jazz
soul jazz
acid jazz
abstract/avant garade

As I build and label I can make SPs.

Any other suggestions?

Smart Playlists Updating on 3G iPod?

I used my 3G iPod for months without even considering that Smart Playlists updated on-the-fly. It just wasn't happening. When I learned from others that it should work (they have other iPod models), I've been going nuts trying to figure out why it's not working.

I know I have the lists set up correctly because when I sync everything works as expected. Without going into details, I have seen some evidence of real time, on-the-fly updating (by creating some very simple playlists with single criteria, etc.), but when I use my real playlists it doesn't work.

What are the rules? Can you not use certain critia? Can they not be nested to deep? Does anyone have this working on a 3G iPod? I can't find any details information on the web.

Most played recently?

I have been trying to figure out for a while how to create a certain playlist and would be more than grateful for some help.

Basically, I find that for whatever reason songs go in and out of fashion for me, so for example I will like a song from 1997 for a month, and then not play it for ages.

What I am unable to do is to isolate that period of time where I like the song, I want to be able to make a smart playlist that chooses the most played songs in a given period of time, say 2 weeks. I thought I had it briefly but it turned out that I had just gotten it to select the songs from my top 25 most played. Another problem for any potential problem solvers is that I do not use a ratings system.

AllMusic Keywords?

AllMusic is amazing for listing all the possible moods, etc. for music and artists. It's so good that it seems like overkill in that if I start tagging my collection to that level, I'm going to be so micro-focussed that I'll never find anything.

For example, between playful and fun, I'm not sure I could identify the difference. I'm working on a list to tape up near my computer of a subset of those terms, but am curious to what detail others with reasonably large collections have employed keywords.

Are you using just a couple, 5, 10, 100?

Live iPod Updating Revisited?

This has been discussed and debated before... without any clear outcome.

My understanding is that this varies from 3g iPods and 4g iPods (with the 4g's updating playlists easier and quicker) but the complexity of the playlist is a key factor in it.

If the value you have modfied (in this case the rating) is a criteria in a smart playlist which your smart playlist references, it appears it it unlikely for it to live-update.

Personally I'd like to see my playlists (in both iTunes and iPods) not live-update until the song has finished playing (this is more relevant on the iPod seeing as one cannot change the ratings of a song unless the song is being played.)

iPod Shuffle: 1/2 tunes permanent, 1/2 random?

Hi. What I wish to achieve is a way for my iPod Shuffle to have 50 or so songs that stay on it permanently, while the rest of the Shuffle gets filled with different, random tunes whenever I autofill. Can anyone figure out how to do this? I can't figure a way to pull it off since the Shuffle can handle only one playlist. Thanks!

Getting started with compound lists?

I have a couple desires that I don't know how to do in a smart playlist...

I want a condition like the search feature that will pick up anything with the specified term in it (i.e. The Kanye West playlist would have all his songs, all his featured songs, and all his produced songs) but I also want:


my rating condition to be greater than **

Another thing I want to do is have all songs from multiple genres with the same rating conditions

All classic rock and folk songs rated greater than **
