 Rate music quickly

iTunes Tips
redline

If you work while listening to iTunes on your Mac, and want to rate your music quickly, here are some tips:

1. Create an "unrated" smart playlist in iTunes:

My rating is (nothing)
Size is greater than 0 MB

Turn on Live Updating

The second item keeps you from rating streams.

2. Either get the handy Synergy preference pane, or some kind of hotkey launcher.

3. If you use Synergy, set hotkeys for play/pause and for each star rating you'll want to use.

If you are using a hotkey launcher, you'll need to work with Applescript. Launch the Script Editor and paste in the following

tell application "iTunes"
if player state is playing then
set thisTrack to current track
set currentRating to thisTrack's rating
set thisTrack's rating to 80
end if
end tell

Note the "80" above: that sets the currently playing track to 4 stars. You'll want to create versions of this with 100/80/60/40/20.

Once you've done that, save the scripts somewhere and create hotkey actions that launch the script in question.

When you feel like rating some music, set your playlist to Unrated and go. At any point when a song is playing, punch the appropriate key combination to rate it. As soon as you rate it, play will stop, so start it again. You can grind through a lot of music this way.

 Star Ratings

iTunes Tips
redline

I give my best tracks in all categories except Jazz and classical 5 stars. My best jazz tracks have three stars and my best classical tracks one star.

Why bother to rate so tightly, either you love them or you don't. I tend to make playlists of just 5 stars or just 3 stars. But, if I want to include both- I set it greater than 2 stars.

I submit this as a topic of discussion

Cheers

 Hidden Tracks

iTunes Tips
redline

For those of you who don't have quicktime pro, i've devised a means of splitting up hidden tracks using only itunes

First, you must copy the song which needs to be split into two mp3 files (both being identical)
next, import both into you're library, renaming one of them to "hidden track" or w/e it may be called.

You then set the start and stop times for each one accordingly so that they begin and end at the right point in the track.

happy splitting!

 How do you match genre?

iTunes Tips

How can I validate each track's genre?

With so many tunes, it seems difficult to get all the genres right. Is there a way yo perhaps match the track artist and title to a database and verify the genre, or amend it where necessary?
