Try a spiritual playlist:


Song name contains -> Faith

Try: faithful, energy, god, love, pray, prayer, angel, Jesus, Buddha, joy, Christ, whole,church, sanctury, centered, worship, etc.

This is really great if you have a lot of Bluegrass - you'd be amazed how many Bluegrass songs contain these words in the title. Also, there are lots of songs that contain these words n the title that aren't spiritual specifically, kinda cool.

My list was very interesting to say the least!

Anyone for Cocktails?

Good varietal playlist:

Add all songs that have anything to do with booze:

start with Alcohol:

Vodak, Burbon, whiskey, Rum, Scotch, Beer etc.

Add:

Bartender, Drunk, Drinks, Bottle, wasted, 007

Or specific drink names:

Martini, old-fashioned, cosmopolitan, screwdriver etc.

Mix and serve!

The Excluded playlist

I've created several unique playlists to cater to my own interests. For example, Short Punk made up of Punk songs under 1:30, Soundtracks, 5 Star songs not recently played, Longer songs, etc. To fill the gap I created a playlist which included songs which were not on any other play list, with the exception of my "star" lists.


Match all -> Playlist -> is not -> Favs
Playlists -> is not -> Recently Played
Playlists -> is not -> Long music
Playlists -> is not -> Short Punk

etc. etc. Cater to any limit you like and I chose only checked songs and live updating.

My list has about 1000 songs from a 2600 song library.

iPod Personal Radio Station

Weighted play by ratings is absolutely the key to making your iPod a true personal radio station.

This is also not a perfect solution, but here's what I do:

Create the following smart playlists:


5 star songs that have not been played in the 
   last 7 days

4 star songs that have not been played in the
   last month

3 star songs not played in the last 90 days

2 stars not played in 6 months

1 star songs not played in a year

Finally, I have what I call a weighted random playlist of songs that are in any of those 5 smartplaylists.

It's taken a while for me to figure out the right length between plays to set for the different ratings, but I think what I've described above is working pretty well.

The problem with this system is that automatic update doesn't work for playlists that reference other playlists on the iPod. It works in iTunes, so I would hope this is a bug they'll eventually fix on the iPod.

Create Radio Stations

Tried using Genre/Rating to create Smart Playlists but found this too hit an miss (too many crossover artists in my collection perhaps)

Instead I have added comments as follows:

Radio 2 (Easy listening, oldies, etc)
Friday Rock Show (Hard Rock, Metal etc.)
XFM (Alternative, Pop-Rock etc)
Jazz FM (Blues, Jazz etc)

A track can have more than one comment and fit into more than 1 Playlist!

Now I can set a Smart Playlist:


Comments contain XFM, Rating is greater than 2 stars

This crosses genres and gets that obscure Captain Beefheart and Zappa tracks in amongst all the Alt. Rock, Pop Rock stuff. I can have an Eagles track along with my Metalica if I feel that way inclined.

Once all tracks have relevant comments I only have to rate them on the fly and they are added to Playlists.

Much more versatile than Genres...
