If you're like me, you can't stand seeing the same artist or album listed twice in your library because there's an extra space stuck somewhere in the tag. I set this smart playlist up to catch all of the tracks in my library with extra spaces.
Match any of the following conditions:
Artist begins with <space>
Album begins with <space>
Song title begins with <space>
Artist ends with <space>
Album ends with <space>
Song title ends with <space>
Artist contains <two spaces>
Album contains <two spaces>
Song title contains <two spaces>
How about labelling all those tunes that really get you going with the comment "Caffeine". The ones that are like an intravenous double espresso, that really grab your attention, make you jump around...whatever.
Create a smart playlist:
Comment contains Caffeine
This would make an ideal playlist for that ride to work on a morning.
On the other hand, how about when you don't want to be made to jump around, when you just want to relax and chill-out. Pick out all those songs that feel that a hot mug of cocoa and label them with the comment "Cocoa".
I have a number of playlists that I use strictly for administrative purposes, such as presenting all unrated songs for rating, songs tagged as temporary, etc. To distinguish between these and playlists used to find music for playing, I put a bullet (option-8) and a space in front of the playlist name. In this way, the administrative playlists get grouped at the beginning of the list of sources in iTunes and playlists on the iPod. It's easy to distinguish between playlist types in this way.
For when you want to listen to one of your all-time favourite albums but not bothered which one/artist/genre etc.
Label up all the songs from your favourite albums with the comment "Classic Album" and use this playlist. Set your iPod to shuffle by Album and play the list. Easy.
