How do live updated smart playlists work on iPods?

I'm using a Mac, and I don't store any music on my computer at all -- all my music's stored on my iPod, which I update manually.

How do live updated smart playlists work on iPods that aren't auto-synced with itunes? Let's say I have a smart playlist that's set to only play songs with a zero play count. Once a song off of such playlist is played through the iPod (its play count then changes to one), when does it get removed from the smart playlist?

I've heard conflicting reports. On these boards, I've seen it implied that live updated smart playlists "refresh" themselves after all the songs on the play list are played, or after you start playing music from another play list, etc.

I think I read on an Apple website somewhere that the smart playlists only get refreshed when the iPod's connected again to iTunes.

How's it work?

It works both ways ;-). Here's my experience:

If you listen to music through your iPod, the Smart Playlists are updated at sync time.

If you listen to your iPod through iTunes on your Mac, the Smart Playlists are updated in real time.

The common denominator here is being connected to a Mac. That's what I've observed.

And here's my experience:

the iPod actually doesn't need to be connected to update smart playlists ... but it's not exactly 'real time' either. You have to back out of the playlist using the menu button, and then open it again in order for it to update. No need to reconnect to iTunes.

I've got a 3rd gen; don't know how/if older iPods do this.

Except that I've tried this on smart playlists compiled of 2 or more other smart playlists, and they DON'T refresh.

Why, I wonder?
