iPod Full?

Recently, I've finally filled my 30 gig iPod. When this happened iTunes asked if I wanted it to pick songs, and refresh my iPod with new song selections everytime I connected. Sounds neat, but how is iTunes picking the songs? What are these selections based on? Rating, number of plays? Just wondering if I'm going to be happy with iTunes picking tunes out of my 6,000+ music library.
