I'm having trouble with some tracks that don't keep their rating on my ipod. I have a "Not Rated" playlist that I use to rate tracks. For some reason, I have a few tracks that keep coming back to appear on the list, after I've rated them once (or numerous times) already. They appear back unrated with no stars.
It seems to happen after I dock my ipod or charge it every night. I'm using OS 10.2, iTunes 3, 10G iPod (2.1).
I believe that the iPod 2.X rating feature requires iTunes 4.X.

Okay, I probably should upgrade my OS and iTunes. That makes sense.
But it seems that some tracks keep the rating I give them, and some don't? Maybe I need iTunes 4.x to rate tracks in a smart playlist. That's what I'm trying to do. otherwise tracks heep their rating. Hmm.... thanks for the feedback.

I'm surprised you're still using v3. Get 4.2 now!
I've never had a problem with ratings with iTunes 4. The only time I lost ratings was when I had a hard drive crash and I lost the file: username/Music/iTunes/iTunes 4 Music Library, which stores your play counts and ratings. If you lose that, you lose your data, so make sure you keep backing it up.

Upgrading your OS to Panther is a great idea, and you are sure to love it, but you can go ahead and upgrade your iTunes now:

Aha....I'm an idiot. For some reason I had the impression that OSX 10.2.8 was required for iTunes 4.x to work. It's just that you need it for SOME features of the program, but they aren't essential. I'll get my OSX updated soon, just haven't had time, or u/l capability.

I have the same problem from time to time. I am running iTunes 4 on Win XP and iPod 2.1 (40GB) I need to do a few more tests but I seem to have narrowed down when it happens. On my way to and from work I rate songs in a Unrated Playlist. If I dock my iPod when get home and let it sync with iTunes BEFORE making any changes in iTunes then it seems to recognize ALL the songs I rated during the day. However, if I make changes (say adding a disc, or adjusting track volumes) in iTunes BEFORE I dock my iPod and let them sync this is when it seems to lose track of some of the songs I rated. Like I said I haven't officially proven this but that seems to be the trend.

Does iTunes write over ratings, comments, etc. when you do an auto sync with the iPod? I've never got this clarified. I know it did in iTunes 3. What about 4? Does iTunes to a two-way update sync of most recently changed songs? Or is it just one way,
iTunes-->iPod?

As far as I know it's two way, so play counts get updated. However, maybe there's a glitch with ratings. I can't test since my original iPod doesn't have rating ability.

My experience has taught me the following:
iTunes auto-syncs one way to the iPod as far as songs are concerned. The iPod is a mirror of what is stored on the computer.
Incremented play counts, date last played and ratings are two way, based on the most recent modification.
Use iTunes 4?
