I'm pretty sure the answer is no. I'd love for someone to contradict me, however.

Someone had mentioned editing an xml file in another posting.
Not sure if that was a .plist in the ~/Library/Preferences/ or an internal to the iTunes.app package.

Are you certain the genres are unused? In my experience, genres automatically disappear from the pop-up menu if they're truely not assigned to any songs.

There is a base set supplied by Apple.

They don't disappear from the pop-up. They do, however, disappear in the browse view, and don't show up as a genre on the iPod.
