iTunes sends unwanted parent playlists to iPod Video

Questions
redline

I just bought an 80 GB fifth generation iPod. It's a nice step up from my previous 4 GB iPod Mini.

Just like with my Mini before, I have four smart playlists enabled on my iPod. They are set to auto-update with fresh music every day.

The four playlists all depend on another smart playlist I have set up in iTunes called "Do Not Copy To iPod". This is where I put all the stuff I wouldn't normally want to hear shuffled during the work day, like audiobooks, movies, and stuff that belongs to other members of my family. It also includes anything that's been played in the last few days.

The four playlists are then set to exclude anything in the "Do Not Copy To iPod" playlist. I've had my Mini set like this since I got it, and every day it refreshes with new music.

However, when my new iPod syncs, iTunes copies both the set of four checked playlists AND the unchecked and much larger "Do Not Copy To iPod" playlist. About half of the files on my iPod end up being stuff I don't want to listen to. My shuffle capability is no longer useful.

My Mini still works like a charm. It only copies the four playlists I tell it to, even though they reference the "Do Not Copy To iPod" playlist.

Apparently, the new iPod is trying to copy all "parent" playlists, regardless of whether you ask for them or not.

Does anyone know how to stop this from happening? Is anyone else having this problem?

 Unrated Songs Playlist/Rating Problem

Questions
redline

Hi,

I have a basic smart playlist set up with all my unrated songs: My Rating is no stars. At the moment when I rate a song in this list it is immediately removed, even if it's currently playing.

As when a song is playing is the most likely time I will rate it; is there a way to let the song finish before it is removed from the smart playlist?

thanks in advance.

 Compare iPod/library content?

Questions

I have created playlists in my itunes library and transferred them to my iPod. However, I also manually transfered songs from my library directly to my iPod. How can I easily identify these songs in order to make sure they are included in a playlist in my library?

Christmas or other seasonal additions to a Shuffle playlist

Questions
redline

I have created a shuffle-like smart playlist that favors higher rated songs, and picks songs that I haven't heard in a while. I would like to have the smartplaylist be able to:

1.) recognize that the current date is close to christmas
2.) add a bunch of christmas music as a result

I have all my christmas music under the genre "Christmas", so recognizing that part is easy. Is it possible to have the ipod recognize what date it currently is?

Thanks

 Random artist?

Smart Playlists
redline

There are a few artists in my library that I have a lot more songs than others. I use the auto-fill option on my new ipod shuffle. The problem is that it gets filled more with some artists than others because i have more from those artists. Is there a way to make a play list that will insure i have a fairly even amount of song's from each artist?

 Album Playlist

redline

I am trying to create a playlist, which when I open it, will display the album titles instead of the song titles. This will save me a lot of time cycling through songs in a large playlist to get to a particular album. Any ideas?

 Resume Play in Order?

Questions
redline

I have a regular playlist of 115 tracks in order of their release date(this is also hard-coded in name, each is prepended with a number). They are 30 mins or more in length and all have remembered playback position. I would like to listen to them in order remembering where in the list of tracks I left off, like resuming a multi-track audio book.

So I would like my smart playlist to have as track one, the track I left off at or the next up if i had ended at the end of a track, followed by any remaining tracks in the list.

Or Looping would be good too, ie. I've listened to tracks 1-6; my smart playlist should then display tracks 7-End followed by 1-6 and when i've finished 7 it goes to the bottom of the stack pushes up track 8 to top etc.

 Weighted SPL's

Questions
redline

I use SPL's to 'put more weight on' certain songs, and 'less weight on' other songs, but I am staring to wonder if it really works...

An example:
SPL1 = 25 songs
SPL2 = 100 songs
SPL3 = pick from 1st or 2nd at random

By playing SPL3 you then hope to hear songs in SPL2 4x as much as SPL1. But since SPL3 is picking from either SPL1 or SPL2, it is a coin flip (50/50) each time it picks a song, which means I wont hear SPL2's songs 4x as much... Has anyone confirmed this?

To make this work correctly I could make a folder containing SPL1 and SPL2, and then SPL3 only plays songs in the folder.

Thoughts?

 Last Played Time?

Questions
redline

Is it possible to make a smart playlist including only songs that were last played during a certain time of day? For example, between midnight and 6am? This brings me to my next question. Can you write macros for smart lists making your own rules that are not within the list of possibilities?

 Smart playlist not changing?

Questions
redline

I'm trying to get a smart playlist that takes a random 1780MB of my 5 star songs. The problem is that this playlist doesn't update. I have more than 1780MB of 5 star music, and every time I plug in my ipod I want the the songs on it to change, but I want them all to be 5 star ones. As it is know I have a playlist that is made up of 1780MB of 5 star songs, but it never changes.

Can someone help me with this?
