Truly Random Shuffle?

Hello everyone,
I am puzzled by the fact that while I chose to have my songs shuffled randomly my iPod does not seem to truly do that. It seems, instead, to have certain songs appear more frequently than others...am I loosing my mind? I am a heavy user of the iPod and have many many songs and many smartplaylists and combination of smartplaylists also...but the shuffle thing is a mystery to me.
Any thoughts? I am hoping this may be a no brainer for most of you :)
